Globus Online

Globus Online is a recommended method of data movement between NGS resources or between an NGS resource and a user’s local machine. Moving data to/from NGS resources – or between an NGS resource and your local server or laptop, is a simple process thanks to Globus Online, a secure hosted service for high-performance file transfer.

Getting Started

Moving Files

Moving data with Globus Online is a fast, easy process. Simply login with your NGS credentials, navigate to the file you want to move, select the destination, and click “Transfer’ - Globus Online manages the entire operation – monitoring performance, retrying failed transfers, correcting problems automatically where possible, and reporting status.

To easily move files using the intuitive web interface:

  1. Log in using your NGS identity (click ‘External Identity’ and select ‘UK NGS’ in the dropdown)
  2. Click ‘Start Transfer’
  3. Select the source endpoint for your transfer and locate the file(s) you want to move
  4. Select the destination for your transfer
  5. Click the arrow to initiate the transfer – Globus Online will notify you of progress and completion, with alerts for any issues that might arise (you can also click on ‘View transfers’ to check the status of your transfers)

Managing Endpoints

‘Endpoint’ is the Globus Online term for the location and destination involved in the transfer (where the file is located now, and where you are moving or copying it).

  • All NGS servers have been enabled as Globus Online endpoints and will be available to NGS users logged in with their NGS credentials – for information on how to do this, see the Globus Online tutorial Part 1
  • For a list of all available endpoints in Globus Online, log in to the service and click “Start Transfer” then click the drop-down menu
  • You can add a new endpoint to the system (such as a local server or your laptop) by using the Globus Connect feature. For more information see the Globus Online Tutorial Part 4
