MySQL Database support
Please note that due to the current funding situation, the NGS is no longer offering free database services. If you are interested in using the NGS database service on a "paid for" basis, please contact the NGS helpdesk.
The MySQL relational database has become extremely popular over recent years; it is fast, reliable and relatively simple to administer.
More importantly, it is free and as such has become a popular tool in many circles, including academia.
The NGS (at Manchester) has hosted a MySQL database for over a year now and holds several large data sets for various academic projects. The service is kept on 3TB of RAID 10 disks and backed up on separate part of its SAN so the system is robust and secure.
If you are new to MySQL, and need help getting started, the NGS team can help you set up your database and import any data you may have. It can also host a virtual machine for you, if you need an environment where you need a web server set up to access the data. Users will retain full admin rights to their database and no other users will have access to the data.
