For data management beyond simple staging of files tools that will manage users data should also be available. These come in a number of forms from the database to a metadata related store, and include such technologies as global filesystems.
For a relatively simple put-get data movement service, the NGS has historically used SRB. In recent years, additional progress has been made in the use of POSIX-like file systems such as AFS, though only on the scale of an institutional network and not as a UK-wide service.
